Salzburg, the city of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the Trapp Family (Sound of Music) is the starting point of this bike journey. The home of the Salzburger Festspiele invites the visitor to a stroll along its river Salzach and through the old part of town. You experience the echoes of the last centuries in its many historical places of interest. The charming hilly landscape around Salzburg, with its moors and numerous lakes with water of potable quality, will accompany you for the week of your trip. This tour is a delight for all senses and you will ask yourself: In which lake will I have a swim today again after the bike tour?
The basic tour is a bike trip in 8 days / 7 nights including boat trips on lake Attersee and Hallstätter See and train ride from Ebensee to Obertraun. The bike trip leads you from Salzburg with its famous old town and a lot of sights and further to the city of Gmunden, Bad Ischl, Hallstatt and Wolfgangsee. You will have a lot to discover at this bike tour around the Salzburger lake area and Salzkammergut!
TOUR PROFILE
You cycle out of the Mozart City on flat bicycle paths along the river Salzach. The rest of the route between the lakes is slightly hilly. The majority of the tour consists of bicycle paths and side roads.

The bike tour begins along the Salzach down the river to Oberndorf, the place of origin of the famous Christmas carol “Silent Night”. On to the Augustinian convent in Michaelbeuern, into the lake region Trumer-Seenland (Obertrumersee, Mattsee, Grabensee) and to Wallersee. The renowned writers Karl Zuckmaier and Stefan Zweig lived here.
From your hotel you travel across the European Nature Reserve “Wenger Moor” to Neumarkt and on to lake Irrsee, in the Salzkammergut you continue to lake Mondsee with its castle and the Benedictine monastery. You continue along lake Attersee, where Gustav Mahler once composed and Gustav Klimt created many of his paintings.
We start the day without our bikes, as we take the boat to Weyregg. From Weyregg you cycle through the valley Aurachtal on to Gmunden with its unique ceramic glockenspiel. You continue along the shore of lake Traunsee with its Schloss Orth (setting of a popular TV series) to Traunkirchen, where the old Fischerkanzel (Fishermen Pulpit) can be seen.
You will cycle to Ebensee and take the train to Obertraun am Hallstättersee with its mighty Dachstein glacier massif and its charming ice caves. You bike along the lake shore to the highlight of the tour, the world heritage site of Hallstatt. Here you have the opportunity of visiting the charnel house and the salt mine. The bike tour takes you along the eastern shore bicycle path on to Bad Goisern.
From Bad Goisern we travel along the river Traun to the time-honoured imperial health resort Bad Ischl with its many historical places of interest. We continue from here along the Ischler-Ache to Wolfgangsee – the lake is today’s destination. It is worthwhile to take the cable railway up the Schafberg (1798 m) here und to enjoy the beautiful vantage point over the Salzkammergut lake plane that it offers.
During today’s stage you cycle on the Ischlertrasse. The route takes you along the lake shore to St. Gilgen, the birthplace of Mozart’s sister Nannerl. After a thrilling downhill ride to Scharfling you continue along Mondsee through Thalgau and Eugendorf and then on the second part of the Ischlertrasse back to Salzburg.
