Mondsee is a town in Upper Austria, located near highway and is very popular with vacationers and day visitors. An ideal starting point for your bike tour to not have to start the trip in a big city like Salzburg. In the center of Mondsee the Basilica of St. Michael with its two towers, located next to the Mondsee Castle, the Almeida Park, the lake promenade with possibilities to take a boat trip await you. On your further journey you will pass some interesting town with your bike: Gmunden with the famous lakeside castle Ort, the imperial city of Bad Ischl und Hallstatt with the oldest salt mine in the world and of course the Mozart-City of Salzburg. TOURPROFILE: slightly hilly, flat bike paths along the Salzach, the majority of the tour runs on bike paths and side roads.
Arrival in Mondsee in Upper Austria. Already on the way to Mondsee you will see the Basilica of St. Michael with its two towers from afar and will guide you to the center of Mondsee, where Mondsee Castle is also located. During a walk through the Almeida Park and along the lake promenade, you will get to know the town. Maybe you wil lhave enough time for a boad trip (not included)?
You start the bike trip along the lake Mondsee. In Unterach am Attersee you take the boat to Weyregg (only during boat season). From Weyregg you cycle through the valley Aurachtal on to Gmunden with its unique ceramic Glockenspiel. You will cycle along the lake Traunsee to Traunkirchen. The overnight takes place in one of the Traunsee-towns: Gmunden, Traunsee, Ebensee.
Today you cycle a short distance to the railway station in Ebensee and take the train to Obertraun/Bad Aussee am Hallstättersee with its mighty Dachstein glacier massif and its charming ice caves. You continue by bike along the lake shore to today’s destination, the world heritage site of Hallstatt. Here you have the opportunity of visiting the charnel house and the salt mine.
Today the tour starts with a boat trip across Hallstättersee and continue on to Bad Goisern and the imperial health resort Bad Ischl. Bad Ischl offers many intriguing historical places of interest such as the Empress Sissi’s tea house, the imperial villa, the imperial park and the Lehar villa. We continue from here along the Ischler-Ache to Wolfgangsee – where you find the today’s destination.
During today’s stage you cycle on the Ischlertrasse (between 1891 and 1957 the historical railway route between Salzburg and Bad Ischl). The route takes you along the lake shore to St. Gilgen, the birthplace of Mozart’s sister Nannerl. After a thrilling downhill ride to Scharfling you continue along Mondsee through Thalgau and Eugendorf and then on the second part of the Ischlertrasse to Salzburg. If you have plenty of time you can do a city walk to discover the sights of Salzburg: Getreidegasse where Mozart's birth house is located, the Castle Schloss Mirabelle with Mirabell garden or the Fortress Hohensalzburg.
Along the river Salzach down the river to Oberndorf, the place of origin of the famous Christmas carol “Silent Night”. On to the Augustinian convent in Michaelbeuern and into the lake region Trumer-Seenland (Obertrumersee, Mattsee, Grabensee). You spend the night in a specially chosen, historically interesting place or a great 4-star hotel near the lake.
The last bike trip leads you through the European Nature Reserve “Wenger Moor” to Neumarkt and on to Irrsee, in the Salzkammergut you continue to Mondsee, where your bike tour ends.
