Lake Constance to Lake Königssee Cycle Path

Start of this tour from Lake Constance to Lake Königssee is the town of Lindau. From here on, the cycle path leads you through the hilly landscape of the Allgäu region of Bavaria. After a spectacular view of the Allgäu Alps, the Tannheimer Mountains and the highest peak of Germany, the Zugspitze, you will reach Hohenschwangau and get a glimpse of Neuschwanstein castle, which is one of Bavaria’s most famous postcard motifs and was built by King Ludwig II. It served as the inspiration for the Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty castle. Situated only a stone’s throw away from the picturesque castle you should not miss the opportunity to visit the Pilgrimage Church of Wies. The church has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and is located near Steingaden. Further on, in Benediktbeuern the Benedictine Order with its over 1250 years of history invites you for a visit. The cycle path guides you to Bad Tölz through the Upper Bavarian picture book scenery until you reach the lakes Tegernsee, Schliersee and Chiemsee. Lake Chiemsee is the largest lake in the region and therefore known as the ‘Bavarian sea’. The island Frauenchiemsee is easy reachable by boat and invites you to take a stroll. You can continue by boat to the larger island Herrenchiemsee where another magnificent castle of King Ludwig II awaits you. Passing Traunstein the cycle path leads to Bad Reichenhall and Berchtesgaden. The final destination of the journey lies in the alpine scenery of the Berchtesgaden National Park. Finally, Lake Königssee, which literally means “king’s lake”, is indeed a crowning finale to a kinglike cycle tour.

TOUR PROFILE: The Lake Constance - Königssee bike path runs through hilly terrain of the foothills of the Alps, partly near-natural paths, partly larger ascents and descents, therefore particularly suitable for sporty cyclists.

Individual Arrival to Lindau on Lake Constance, where the bike tour starts on the next day. Lindau is known for the stone lighthouse and the Bavarian lion statue in the harbor.

The cycle path leads from Lindau on Lake Constance along the Leiblach River – which at the same time represents the border to Austria - to the hillier countryside of the Allgäu region. Scattered between forests and meadows, several farms and hamlets can be seen which characterize the landscape. After passing the villages Hergenweiler, Maria-Thann and Röthenbach the first stage of the cycle path ends in Oberstaufen.

The second stage starts in Oberstaufen and guides you around the Staufener Mountain (1032 m). Through the valley of the Konstanzer Ach River, the route continues to the lake Großer Alpsee. Passing Lake Kleiner Alpsee, you reach Immenstadt and cross the Iller River.  From there on, the route leads to Gallmoos, a town located 4 km/2.5 mi in northern direction of Sonthofen, and further on to the municipality of Rettenberg at the foot of the Grünten mountains with its highest peak at 1730 m the Übelhorn. Further, the path ascends steadily, passing the Rottach reservoir until Memersch (with 1000 m above sea level it is the highest point of the entire Lake Constance to Lake Königssee cycle path) as well as Oy-Mittelberg and Maria Rain towards Nesselwang at the foot of the mountains Edelsberg (1629 m) and Alpspitze (1575 m). From Nesselwang, the tour continues with magnificent views of the Allgäu Alps, the Zugspitze and the Tannheimer mountains through forests and fields past little villages to Hopfen am See.

Starting in Hopfen am See, the route leads you past Füssen to Lake Forggensee. Seven large and several small lakes can be seen during this passage. Going on, this stage takes you to Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein, the picturesque castles of the former Bavarian King Ludwig II. The highest mountains of the region are the Säugling (2047 m) and the Tegelberg (1880 m). The top of the Tegelberg can be reached by cable car. Slightly hidden are the lakes Schwansee and Alpsee in a unique mountain scenery. Through Schwangau, the cycle path heads past Lake Bannwaldsee to Trauchgau. From Trauchgau the route continues along dirt roads and side streets upwards to the forest of the Ammergau mountains and to the Königsstraße, which literally means “king’s road”. It runs in between the mountains Schneidberg (1012 m) and Niederbleich (1589 m). Finally, it leads to the Halbammers valley and down to Altenau. After passing Altenau, the cycle path passes by the wildlife reserve ‘Altenauer Moor’ and leads past Saulgrub to Bad Kohlgrub. From there on, the road descends to Grafenaschau and at the foot of the Aschau mountains to Eschenlohe at the Loisach River.

The fourth stage leads nearly without any ascents from Eschenlohe along the Loisach River and the Landesgestüt Schwaganger - the biggest horse stud farm in Bavaria - to Kochel am See. Lake Kochelsee is located on the foot of the 1731 m high Herzogstand Mountain. Hidden behind the Herzogstand Mountain lies the 200 m higher situated Lake Walchensee. Further, the route continues evenly, on the foot of the mountains, through the wetlands of the Loisach mire until you reach Benediktbeuern and get a view of the Benediktenwand Mountain (1800 m). Passing Bad Heilbrunn the road runs between the Blomberg Mountain (1248 m) and the Stallauer pond to Bad Tölz.

The fifth stage starts in Bad Tölz and leads through dirt paths and side streets with a few ups and downs along the base of the mountains Sulzkopf, Rechelkopf, Lucken- und Kogelkopf (from 1279 m until 1370 m) and through the municipalities Gmund am Tegernsee and Dürnbach. The route runs around the Wendelstein Mountain (1838 m) and its adjacent mountains through forests and meadows, descending down to the Mangfall valley until you reach Au/Bad Feilnbach.

From here, the road continues to descend through the ‘Moos’ until you reach Neubern/Altenmarkt next to the Inn river. From Altenmarkt the route leads past Rohrdorf slightly ascending and soon afterwards to Frasdorf. Now it is not far anymore to Aschau in the Chiemgau region. With a slight tilt downhill, the tour leads to Bernau, which is located at the foot of the Kampenwand Mountain (1668 m) and on the southwestern end of Lake Chiemsee. Lake Chiemsee is also known as the ‘Bavarian sea’. Without further ascends the stage runs between mountains (Hochfelln with 1664 m and Hochgern with 1663 m) and the wetlands of the Chiemgau area through Grassau to Bergen. There is only one moderate ascent between Bergen und Siegsdorf.

Today‘s stage is a comfortable one. In the beginning, the road takes you from Siegsdorf along the Traun River to Traunstein. A short but steep ascent has to be mastered. Soon afterwards, the route leads with a few ups and downs past a plateau down to Teisendorf at the foot of the Teisenberg Mountain (1333 m). Cycling along the Ramsaubach creek the route leads without any major ascents past Lake Höglwörter and from Anger to Piding, which is located near the Saalach creek and Bad Reichenhall. From Piding the route goes on along the Saalach creek to Bad Reichenhall, which is located at the foot of the Latten Mountains and at the border of the Untersberg National Park. From Bad Reichenhall the route ascends to Bayerisch Gmain and through a narrow valley, which is located between the mountains Berchtesgadener Hochthron (1972 m) and Predigtstuhl (1688 m), to Berchtesgaden.
